KEY WORDS:
postmodernity, convergence, globalization, simulation
The mass
media, which has continuously been changing and developing, is a term referring
to technologies used to reach broad audiences across the world. Due to these
changes postmodernity was introduced in the 1960s, a new age in which
we live. Convergence, as one of the main characteristics of
postmodernity, would be the ability of accessing different types of media through
one common, integrated platform, which makes it easier for us to share
information more easily than ever. This merging of variety of media is in
contact with globalization, which was mainly focused on economy. However,
when it comes to mass media, globalization represents eliminating international
boundaries and the connection between nations and multinational corporations that
creates opportunities to bring them all together. Also, simulation is an
important characteristic when we talk about mass media. It can be described as
a representation of a false image in our social world. In other words, we are
constantly forced to see this perfect world on all types of platforms which is actually
nowhere near the real world we live in. It's something we encounter on a daily
basis and think we are supposed to look up to and live up to, which should not
be the case.
