FORM – Form is a prominent rhetorical structure in texts. It can refer to several things, shape, appearance, performance, even a pattern of something. According to Burke, there are four general varieties of form: progressive form, repetitive form, conventional form, and minor (incidental) form.
GENRE – A genre is a class or constellation of messages that have some common
characteristics: formal, substantive, and/or situational. Its purpose is to
help us categorise certain works of art, like books, movies, music etc.
RHETORIC – Rhetoric is the art of persuasion, either in speech or
in writing, which originates from Ancient Greece. It operates with symbols or
techniques that influence how the audience thinks and feels. All media products
are rhetorical.
DOXA – Doxa is an unquestionable knowledge or belief, also known as “common sense”. It is
part of the culture. It supports certain ideologies.
INTERPELLATION – Interpellation is one of the four ways how ideology
structures our social world. It is a process by which certain individuals are
turned into ideological subjects, making the individuals just a collection of
ideologies, it is our identity.
OTHERING – Othering is a form of representation of race in media,
it is the process of marginalizing the minorities by defining them in
relationship to the white race, aka the majority. Othering is treating people
from another race differently from the race one belongs to. Othering often
implies that the white race is superior to the others. It can manifest in the
media through difference and exoticism.
AMERICAN DREAM – American Dream is an ideology, an assumption that hard
work leads to success regardless of where the person was born, which class were
they born into, or the person’s race, it implies that success is measured in
material goods and wealth. This belief suggests that hard work and prosperity
are the key to happiness.
