WK4
FORM: Represents
the need for a logical sequence in narrative. It is used to create anticipation
because we desire to know what comes next. There are four types of form:
1.
progressive
form – a step by step form of storytelling
2.
repetitive
form – repeating behaviors
3.
conventional
form – classification using shared conventions
4.
and
minor (incidental) form – literary devices.
We can see
these forms from movies and books to even YouTube videos depending on genre.
GENRE: Stylistic
classification of text based on shared attributes. We notice genres in almost
every type of media and we probably have our own favorite depending on the
medium. Sometimes like in the case of Taylor
Swift’s new albums we can see discourse on how genres like indie and folk are
tied to a certain class even. Though genres are not strict and are subject to
change, they serve as guides and help in categorizing work.
RHETORIC: The
art of persuasion present in all media. Using certain symbols and techniques to
influence the consumer into a certain way of thinking or feeling.
DOXA: From
the Ancient Greek word meaning “to seem” or “to appear”, Doxa represents a
commonly held belief or popular opinion. They often vary from culture to
culture - for instance in China it is popular to believe drinking hot water is
extremely healthy and can help with illness. One common in Serbia that I have
experienced multiple times is that a woman shouldn’t sit at the corner of a
table because she will never get married. :(
INTERPELLATION:
The process with which we internalize ideas in our culture. It is an unconscious
process that can subject us to different ideologies – we ourselves becoming a
mass of different ideologies of our culture.
OTHERING:
The separation or “othering” of people based on their difference. A tactic used
often used by politicians to further a divide often based on class or even race
and sexuality. Something media also uses for appeal for the majority (in America
often the white population) by making the othered minority either into a certain
caricature or presenting them as something exotic (dehumanizing them in the
process).
AMERICAN
DREAM: The idea that anyone can achieve greatness with the right amount of
effort. It relies on the idea that society it takes place in has few barriers which
is a false dream often pushed in the US and is used as a tool by the wealthy to
undermine the struggles of the lower class.
