When it comes to spending money, I’m certainly one of the most irresponsible people in my friend group. I always end up buying something stupid that I don’t need despite the price tag and despite my friends telling me not to buy that just because “it looks cool…”

First signs of my problem occurred about one year ago. I was with my friends in a mall and we were just hanging out, noting special, but at one moment I caught with a corner of my eye something that blew my mind at the time. At one of the stands I saw a knife, and not any regular knife, a completely useless knife. That knife cost me half of my savings, and all because I thought it looked unusual. It can’t be used for cutting or slicing, and it was a complete waste of money. Now it just collects dust in my room, and I rarely ever pick it up from the shelf, but I guess it’s a okay conversation starter.

Second examples of my reckless spending are my glasses. The fact that I needed glasses gave me an opportunity to do something stupid. I spent more than double the amount of money that was necessary on my glasses just because the rim looked cool. There were a couple of other designs that didn’t differentiate to much from the ones I picked, and those designs were a lot cheaper, but I chose the expensive one for no good reason.

The final example of my problem is my deodorant. I have been buying the same deodorant for 3 years just because I think the bottle looks nice. There is no other reason really, and to add salt to the wound, I’m not a huge fan of the smell, I just like the bottle. The bottle is mat black with some gold details. I think that the amount of money that I spent on that deodorant surpasses my two previous examples by a mile.

In conclusion I think that everybody has this problem, it’s just depends on how big it is from one person to the other one. Personally I don’t thinks that this is a huge problem for a person just as long some boundaries exist. My boundaries are my friends that have prevented so many dumb purchases and I’m thankful for them. If it weren’t for them I would probably be homeless by now.

  1. to add insult to injury - do not translate proverbs, look for the "parallel" ones

  2. Also, please avoid using "when it comes to" phrase both in speech and especially in writing, it is an unspecific crutch type of phrase, a feature of poor style. The same applies to "što se tiče" in Serbian.
