UNDERSTANDING KEY TERMS 2: SPECTACLE, SUPERSTRUCTURE, SYNERGY, OBJECTIVITY, INFORMATION BIAS, POLITICAL BIAS
Through Marxist theory, we know the relation of the economic base (the means of production) and the cultural superstructure (religion, art, media, government, law).
As capitalism has become the dominant force the media we consume is made with the goal of earning a profit despite all else. Using synergy studios make multiple rehashes of old content, repackaging and remaking the same product and enhancing its appeal with celebrities and spectacles – celebrities being recognizable names and faces and spectacles often scandalous and controversial events pushed by sensationalized news. The news itself stands to profit from forcing political and informational bias, being selective with what they report and how they do it even though it is expected of them to follow the rule of objectivity - factual and unbiased reporting of important information.
The media we consume shapes our lives day to day and being critical of how it functions below its surface level is important in staying objective ourselves.
