The Pseudobulbar affect. What is it? Is there a cure?
An interview with a troubled comedian who suffers this condition.
By Igor Prisic, BBC News
Sun. 15 Nov 2020.
Pseudobulbar affect (PBA) is a condition that's characterized by episodes of sudden uncontrollable and inappropriate laughing or crying. Pseudobulbar affect typically occurs in people with certain neurological conditions or injuries, which might affect the way the brain controls emotion.
This exact condition is what Arthur Fleck, the striving stand-up comedian, describes as torturing. He tells how his ordinary life is constantly destroying him. This mental state causes almost all the people he meets, to reject and look down upon him, even though all he wants is to be accepted by others.
He told us that during his working hours last week, he was attacked and beaten up by a group of teenagers. For him, this was devastating. By the end of the week he also found out that his therapist cut off his medication.
This rare condition is very susceptible to further development, with little chance of recovery. What is even worse, other mental illnesses are known to be developed by PBA's symptoms. It is clear that this man is no threat to people, and is only highly misunderstood.
From what we have seen, his main purpose is to make people laugh, but given his mental state, it is very difficult for him to do so. This was the case in his stand-up comedy performance where he is unable to deliver a punchline because of his uncontrollable bursts of laughter. Even so, he was ridiculed, and a video of his performance went viral.
There is some hope for Fleck, since he is listed to appear on the Murray Franklin Show next Friday, so we are yet to see his true performance.
