The unbearable ease of depoliticization
Profit is the main goal of our capitalist society and the vast majority of our society stops at nothing to get to that goal. Sonja Leboš proved this in the given article through explaining how Yugoslavian monuments are being used for all the wrong purposes.
Jan Kempenaers published a book "Spomenik", which was followed by Willem Jan Neutelings' "Spomeniks: The Monuments of Former Yugoslavia. Introduction to the work of Jan Kempenaers" and Jonathan Jimenez's "Spomeniks". These are all practically the same - portraying meaningful historical monuments as nothing more than art. Of course monuments as such are art, but to overlook the importance, value and pain behind this art is just disrespectful and inhumane. This act of using the same idea that proved to be profitable again and again is typical marxist strategy called logic of safety.
Bogdan Bogdanovic’s monument was used in an advertisment by an Australian company “Valley Eyewear” which caused huge disapproval.
“Yunicorn” web store is making money off selling sculptures, T-shirts and pins of the Yugoslavian monuments. This instance of the monuments being used for commercial puropses by distributing them into multiple items for selling is synergy.
To someone who is familiar with the history of Yugoslavia and who is aware of how much respect these monuments deserve, it is painful to watch them being exploited as nothing but mystical aesthetics, something more to be used for gaining profit.
Actually, Valley Eyewear had to cancel their campaign after ordinary people from all around the world denounced their apparent misappropriation of the site. They got plenty of bad press and people boycotting their products so they even had to apologize.
