WK 2 The unbearable ease of depoliticization
To depoliticize, according to The Cambridge Dictionary, means
to cause something or someone to have no political connections. In this article written by
Sonja Leboš we learn about how these monuments have been depoliticized.
The monuments were built to commemorate all of the lives lost in The Second
World War, but are now being used for something completely different.
The people no longer see the message behind them, or just refuse to see as it
is not important to them, so now they use them for their personal profit. As Leboš
says, they are now being made into jewelry and pendants, criticized for being “ugly”,
and used as a background picture for some products.
I agree with the author and I also find this to be utterly disrespectful to all of the victims, to the artists who
planned out and built these monuments, and to the people whose loved ones
suffered a horrible death in The Second World War.
Even though, as I said, I find this disrespectful, in times like these, when capitalism is present, it comes to me as not such a big of a surprise. Everybody is chasing profit and only caring about themselves. And when they don't have any more ideas that would help them earn money, they start doing things similar to this one, and they do not care about the fact that these particular monuments might be important to someone. No, they search for profit in anything, and if it works, it works.
