WK 4 UNDERSTANDING KEY TERMS
FORM- Form is the logical underpinning of any narrative and represents the logical sequence of events. It also creates an anticipation and wont for the knowledge of what happens next.
GENRE- Genres are the categorization of texts based on their stylistic characteristics. Genres unify specific stylistic elements into a coherent group used in order to more generally differentiate between different texts, However a genre is never truly determined, they are used as guiding points to the type and style of the text.
DOXA- Doxa is a common belief or a popular opinion. Usually in the forms of aphorisms such as: "The early bird catches the worm". Each distinct culture has it's own set of these popular beliefs which can differ wildly.
INTERPELLATION- The process through which we encounter our culture and immerse ourselves in the particular ideas and kinks. This suggest that an idea is not simply our own, but a tower built on the scaffolding of out culture.
OTHERING- A process of alienation by categorizing people due to their distinct differences and ostracizing them from society. Usually these are marginal groups which do not have a big enough voice. This in turn creates an "US VS THEM" mentality.
AMERICAN DREAM- The set of ideals by which any person can achieve success without hindrance through hard work and determination. This idea idolizes personal freedoms and lifts them up on the pedestal of importance. It is a prevalent philosophy in the United States of America.
