WEEK ZERO - Understanding key terms
Convergence:
The term is used to describe the tendency of all media to share a common platform through which they can spread. It is a relatively recent phenomenon, however we could not imagine our day to day life without it, now that it is deepley integrated. One major example of media convergence would be related to newspapers and magazines, which have currently reached an all-time low point. And of course this is due to technology reaching new heights, where most of us can now find any news article simply by tapping our phones twice, and we can view photos and even videos related to the article.
Globalization:
Globalization is the process by which organizations and companies start operating on an international scale, thus gaining international influence. This is very frequently seen in mass media, with its companies constantly striving towards creating as many networks through as many countries as possible, expanding their market and spreading cultural influence as well.
Postmodernity:
Literally, the era that comes after modernity. It started after the 1960s and is most significantly recognised by the so-called "techonological revolution" which has brought with it an increase in living standards and welfare, with the the focus of companies mainly being to satisfy every customer. Although most of those companies strive toward leisure more than practicality.
Simulation:
Literally meaning the imitation of something real. The accent is on the word "imitation", and it is best shown through mass media, often trying to show us how thing should look, sound, feel, thus further detaching us from the real reality.
