WK 1 UNDERSTANDING KEY TERMS

SPECTACLE- Spectacle is a perverse showing of a true event, overly dramatizing all of it's aspects, and distorting the story. It is used to draw more attention and readers/viewers, because of the innate characteristics of human beings, because of which these kinds of news are more appealing.

SYNERGY- Is a strategy of multimedia companies in which they use multiple smaller companies in the production of their end product, with the intent of maximizing profit.

OBJECTIVITY- Is the effort of presenting facts and situations in a fair way, not showing any type of bias which would distort the facts, but showing the story as it is.

INFORMATION BIAS- Four major types:

1. PERSONALIZATION- The overreaching focus on the individual rather than on the institutions, which provides a skewed perspective, to make the story more personal an impactful.

2. DRAMATIZATION- Presenting the information as a narrative, to increase it's appeal.

3. FRAGMENTATION- Focusing on stories as individual entities instead of focusing on them through the proper context, which robs the story itself of it's main aspects and key insight.

4. AUTHORITY- The manufacturing of conflicts through crating a narrative of authority vs disorder. Usually through pinning institutions which hold authority against any type of disorder in the society of the day.

POLITICAL BIAS- A political leaning of a news organization, in which it fails to objectively provide facts without imbuing them with that particular biased perspective.
