WK4 Homework
Form:
The form of a piece of writing is simply its structure, how its constructed and organized. It represents the logical sequence of events in a piece, and its goal is to create anticipation and the wish to know what will happen next.
Genre:
Texts can be divided into genres depending on their stylistic features. A genre brings together different recognizable stylistic characteristics in order to draw clearer lines between different texts. However, a single genre is never truly determined, but rather laid out as a guideline.
Doxa:
It is defined as a common belief or popular opinion. They are usually in the form of sayings such as: "You cant judge a book by its cover". Each culture has its own set of these doxas which can be vastly different.
Interpellation:
This is a process through which we encounter our culture and its values and internalize them. This suggests that an idea is not simply our own, but that it has been given to us and we chose to accept it.
Othering:
Othering is a process of alienation by categorizing a group of people due to their differences and ostrasizing them from society, these differences being, ethnicity, religion, gender and so on. Usually these are marginal groups, and from this arises the "us vs them" mentality.
American dream:
The American Dream is an ideology in which freedom means the opportunity for prosperity and success, through hard work in a society with few barriers. This is deeply rooted even in the Declaration of Independece, which says that "all men are created equal" with the right to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness"
